A few years back Canggu was full of rice fields and was a rural set-up. However, with the slow unveiling of the surfing opportunities in Canggu, a surfing crowd assembled here for scintillating surfing experiences. Moreover, the best part is that Canggu has something to offer for every surfer, whether you are a beginner trying to master slow white-wash waves or an adept surfer playing effortlessly high dive hollow waves. The long, 5 kilometer stretch of Canggu beach includes the Berawa beach in the southeast to Pererenan beach. Here are the best beaches in Canggu that you add to your morning wave hunt.
Berawa Beach
Looking for a fun time on both a reef and beach break, then Berawa is for you. Berawa Beach is not as powerful as Echo Beach; but it is quite popular among mid level surfers. The waves are intermediate in size ranging from 2 to 6ft, spontaneous and fast which is comfortably manageable by regular surfers. The beach is decked with rental corners where you can easily find a board, a bite to eat and a sunset beer for after your surf. The best time to surf Berawa is during mid to low tides.
Batu Bolong
Batu Bolong is the next surf spot after Berawa, with fat waves rolling over sand and reefs. Here offers the perfect, slow waves SUP and long boarding. In comparison to Berawa, the waves are smaller, around 1 to 4ft, however this makes for the perfect long, slow ride for people SUP and long boarding. Batu Bolong is particularly characterized by its reef, which allows the waves to break right out to sea, rather than on the beach. For safe and risk free surf, mid or high tide is best.
Old Man’s
Just a few meters from the Batu Bolong surf spot, Old man’s is a much sorted after surf destination in Canggu. Quite interestingly this spot has been named after a popular bar nearby. However, according to surfers the waves are formed quite a distance from the shoreline, and are pretty fast compared to Batu Bolong. Thus, for beginners, it is definitely better to avoid this surf spot unless you’re prepared to deal with bigger sets and faster waves. However, for dexterous surfers, you can enjoy long board surfing here.
Echo Beach Surf
This is one of the most popular surf spots in Canggu, where both intermediates as well experts head to try their hand at the fast paced, fun waves. From Echo Beach, you can see Echo, Pererenan and Sand Bar.The Echo Beach Main surf spot is an ideal reef break with 3 to 8ft high barrel like waves, alluring to adept surfers. Here you will find left waves mostly with the occasional right. The best surfing can be experienced during high tide.
Sand Bar
If you love to play in some faster paced, bigger waves, Sand Bar is your destination. However, thanks to the sand bottom, you don’t have to worry as much about any nasty reef cuts. Be sure to work on your paddling strength before heading out here though as the rips and currents here can be very strong.
Pererenan Stairs Surf Spot
This is perhaps the last surfing spot along the Canggu coastal line. It has a mixed sand and reef bottom. You will find the spot mostly crowded throughout the year. Surfing here during mid to high tide, minimal wind and around 5ft waves is ideal.
